Cardiac Rehabilitation

About this Service
Specialty Image What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Cardiac rehabilitation services are designed to help people with heart disease learn what they can do to take care of their hearts and, as much as possible, prevent the occurrence of more heart problems. This is an outpatient program offered by Immanuel St. Jospeh's. It consists of one hour sessions two - three times a week. This supervised program, which is prescribed by your physician, is tailored to your individual needs. Components include exercise, education and counseling.

Who can join?
Almost everyone with heart disease can benefit from some type of cardiac rehabilitation. No one is too old or too young.

How can cardiac rehabilitation benefit me?
Cardiac Rehabilitation is a safe, effective way to help you:

  • feel better and stronger
  • reduce stress
  • break old habits
  • lower your risk of future heart problems
  • start an exercise routine
Who makes up the cardiac rehabilitation team?
The cardiac rehabilitation program can involve many health care professionals. Your team may include:
  • your family doctor and other specialists
  • registered nurses
  • exercise specialists (or physiologists)
  • physical therapists
  • dietitians
  • diabetes educators
  • counselors, behavior therapists or psychologists
  • you! The most important member of the team is you. No one else can make you exercise, quit smoking or eat a healthier diet.
Is there a cost for the program?
Yes, there is a charge. However, Medicare and personal insurance may cover all or part of the cost of your cardiac rehabilitation. We recommend you find out what will be covered by your individual plan. The cardiac rehabilitation nurses are also available to help answer most of your questions about your cardiac rehabilitation program.

How often do I attend and for how long?
The goals of cardiac rehabilitation are different for everyone. The team will help you design a plan that will best meet your specific needs. Exercise sessions are scheduled Monday - Friday at different times in the morning and afternoon. Typically, participants attend cardiac rehabilitation for an average of four to eight weeks.
