Luther Midelfort is excited to begin work on a building project that will be a huge advancement in the way we care for our patients.

The new building will replace the aging and deteriorating Luther Midelfort facilities that date back to 1905. At the same time, it will allow us to provide fully integrated and coordinated care to our patients between inpatient and outpatient settings.

What is being built?

The five-story, 358,000-square-feet building that will house:
  • New BirthCenter and Women's Health inpatient department
  • Integrated Cancer Center featuring radiation oncology, chemotherapy treatment rooms, physician exam rooms and a separate entrance
  • New, larger patient rooms for patients with heart problems (Medical Telemetry inpatients)
  • Expanded outpatient operating rooms and surgery center
  • Shelled areas for future relocation of additional hospital patient rooms
  • Shelled space for an auditorium for community education
  • New hospital entrance and lobby
  • Parking ramp that will provide 800 parking spaces for patients, visitors and employees with an enclosed walkway to the hospital

Where is it being built?

The building will occupy the space in front of Luther Hospital's current front entrance and face Half Moon Lake and Whipple Street. The parking ramp will be on the corner of Whipple and Chestnut streets.

Whipple Street will be shifted slightly toward the lake to make room for the structure.

Overall, the building is intended to be an expression of "open arms" and will use elements of nature — water, wood, sandstone and paths that resemble rivers — to create an environment of healing.

When will construction begin?

Construction on the parking ramp has already begun and should be complete in fall 2008.

Construction of the new building will begin in fall 2008 and will be completed by the end of 2010.

Why do we need it?

Many areas of Luther Hospital date back to 1905. These aging and deteriorating facilities are unable to endure further remodeling to accommodate new technology and the ever-changing needs of our patients.

This project will allow needed updates to ensure that patients have access to state-of-the art technology and environments that are safe and meet their needs and the needs of their families. The project will replace and augment existing healthcare facilities, ensuring that the region continues to be a hub for high-quality, patient-focused healthcare services.

Features of the new building will include:

  • Larger patient rooms that accommodate state-of-the art equipment so care can be brought to the patient rather than requiring the patient to move
  • Comfortable family waiting areas allowing family and friends to stay close by and participate in the care of their loved ones if they desire
  • Private showers in all private, patient rooms
  • Separate entrance and parking for Cancer Center patients
  • Private, whirlpool tubs for expectant and new mothers
  • A healing environment with a strong tie to nature

The new hospital entrance will face Half Moon Lake. Whipple Street will be relocated adding a slight curve toward the water to make as much room as possible for the new building. A new entry, lobby, waiting and lounge areas will be created as a "hub" with easy access to all other parts of the organization.

The new integrated Cancer Center will also be on the first floor. This Center will allow Mayo Clinic radiation oncologists and Luther Midelfort oncologists the space to work together to coordinate patient care. Patients receiving chemotherapy and radiation will have multiple levels of privacy and a separate entrance and parking lot making it as convenient as possible for them to receive their treatments.

The lower level will be shelled at this time with plans for an auditorium for community education. Floors four and five will also be shelled for future relocation of additional hospital patient rooms.

Planning for growth

We have spent the last several years meeting with our patients and representatives from the community to define what they want out of their healthcare experience.

We are excited about this project and are eagerly anticipating the ways it will enhance the care that we provide to our patients now and for many years to come.

We invite you to be a part of bringing this level of care to the region by participating in the development campaign. Please click here.
