The “Project Pink” Team What is so special about “Project Pink’s” fight against breast cancer? Sandy Siewert, one of the team’s six breast cancer survivors, explains:“I found out I had breast cancer during a routine mammogram. I was so surprised, but you just never know. It feels good to be part of this team. Survival is a gift.” In addition to Siewert, breast cancer survivors are Connie Carpenter, Sandy Langdon, Anne Olson, Char Rigelman and Jackie Ryan. Other members of “Project Pink” are Mary Gravenish, Chris Gulden and Gloria Hoth. “Project Pink” began with the vision of increasing awareness of breast cancer and the importance of its early detection,” says Mary Gravenish, director of development and a key “Project Pink” initiator. “After working on and receiving a $100,000 grant from the Minnesota Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, our vision started to become a reality.” The “Project Pink” team meets weekly and sometimes as often as twice a week. At these meetings, members brainstorm ideas on how to create awareness for the importance of early detection and plan activities that will help them reach their ultimate goal of $300,000 to purchase a digital mammography machine. The team’s first fundraising activity was a May basket sale, which sold 320 dozen roses, raising nearly $2,500. Apparel and tote bags donning the “Project Pink” logo are also available for purchase as another fundraiser. The team also has several activities planned for Water Ski Days. Anyone interested in helping can call Mary at 345-6707 or Gloria at 345-6709.
