Real life success stories,

right here, close to home.

At first it felt like heartburn. Then the cold sweats started, and Jean Hendel realilzed this may be something more than a bad case of acid reflux. From that point, things happened very quickly. Within 10 minutes she was in the Immanuel St. Joseph's emergency room. She was rushed to the cardiac cath lab, where her clogged right coronary artery was opened and stents inserted, and within 30 minutes of her arrival Jean was out of serious danger. "I got all the help I needed," she says, "and I continue to feel good."

Undergoing Cancer Treatment

When Rebecca Hewitt's biopsy turned out to be malignant, she had a mastectomy a week later. Rebecca lives only fifteen minutes away from Immanuel St. Joseph's, and being so close to her weekly radiology and chemotherapy treatments has made all the difference. "I never missed a day of  work," she says. "At first we considered going to Rochester or the Twin Cities, but my doctor and friends convinced me that I could get the same quality of care here. They were right." Being so close to home also means that her mother, whom she considers a "co-survivor," has been with her all the way, a significant part of her therapy.
As a wrestling coach and health teacher, Janesville's Mike Niemezyk, 56, taught about the warning signs of a heart attack. Early in 2005 he experienced them first-hand while packing for a wrestling meet. After Mike felt pain and tightness in his chest and shoulders, his local doctor ordered a stress test. "I figured I could walk on a treadmill for hours," Mike says. "I lasted only four minutes." He was immediately airlifted to Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital on the Mankato-based Mayo One helicopter. He underwent an angioplasty to expand one of his heart arteries and a stent was inserted to keep it open. "I was extremely fortunate to have this kind of specialized care."
