Tough economy spurs increase in funding requests

Funding applications have arrived in the Foundation's mailbox at a record pace throughout 2009.  Most requests come from departments and programs within Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, but community groups may also apply for funding in areas related to the Foundation's mission.  (These requests generally comprise less than 20% of Foundation funding in a given year.)

Tight budgets have many groups searching for ways to stretch their resources. All departments within Franciscan Skemp Healthcare have implemented cost-saving measures and reduced budgets in light of the challenging economy.  Many area non-profits saw little or no return on their investments last year, resulting in less support for budgeted expenses in 2009. Some groups have also seen significant cuts in funding from government agencies and other sources they have come to rely on.  All of these factors have contributed to a greater-than-average number of funding requests.

We've felt the pinch as well.  The Foundation's 2009 general grant-making budget is only about half what it was last year, making our job more challenging than ever.  Board members and staff have been especially diligent in researching funding requests and weighing each against opportunities that may be lost.  Still, we consider ourselves fortunate in that the Foundation has numerous "designated funds" which are unaffected by investment earnings and are available to meet pressing needs.

These funds provide support for specific areas such asthe neonatal intensive care unit, the cancer center, cardiac services, diabetes education, medical research, hospice and pastoral care to name a few. They enable the Foundation to help departments stretch their budgets and ensure the highest quality care is maintained. Other designated funds include the Danny Mitby Fund, aiding patients who struggle with costs associated with diabetes; the Oasis Fund, which provides temporary support for cancer patients who experience financial hardships while in treatment; and the Thunder Ride Fund, which assists families with expenses related to caring for a child with type 1 diabetes.

When you make a gift to Franciscan Skemp Foundation and specify the area you wish to support, you are likely contributing to a designated fund.  The Foundation relies on these gifts, as well as those given to address areas of greatest need, to maintain programs, purchase medical equipment and extend care to those in need.

Please know that your support is always greatly appreciated -- and even more treasured during these challenging economic times.  With your help we will continue to fund programs and services vital to maintaining a healthy community.  Thank you.
